We've just started weaning, amid lots of worrying that he's not quite six months yet, but he certainly seems ready - he can sit well in his high chair, pick up food, take it to his mouth, and the tongue thrust reflex has certainly gone as he is more than happy to swallow food. I had planned to do baby-led weaning (BLW) which is where you offer the baby finger foods from day one and let him feed himself. However we started mashing the odd thing and giving it to him on a spoon so that he could get the idea, and he loved it. He likes being spoonfed, though he also likes being given a loaded spoon to feed himself with. I guess we'll do a mixture of traditional and baby-led weaning.
So far James has had banana (the best thing ever, apparently!), baby porridge, carrot, broccoli, swede, spicy parsnip soup, carrot and coriander soup, salmon, red pepper, and has had a crust of bread to chew on but not really eaten any. Here's a couple of pictures of him eating his tea last night (mashed banana and porridge, with sticks of banana):
